Russian illustration from 1904, the year of the Russo-Japanese War, showing Russia with an olive branch looking eastwards at the Japanese devil looming over the Russian fleet in the Pacific.
The Japanese declared war in February 1904 after attacking the Russian navy at Port Arthur in China (hence the fleet below the devil). After a series of Russian defeats the war came to end in 1905 with the Treaty of Portsmouth.
