Spanish Falaginist poster from ca. 1936 showing a stylised graphic of boy with a rifle marching in Falangist uniform. José Antonio Primo de Rivera founded the Falange Española in 1933. His philosophy of Falangism shared many of its characteristics with Italian fascism (though the degree of similarity if disputed), outlined in the party’s founding manifesto that condemned socialism, Marxism, republicanism and capitalism and championed Catholicism, national unity and authoritarianism. The party performed poorly in the 1933 elections and as a result merged with the Juntas de Ofensiva Nacional-Sindicalista, another nationalist organisation, to form the Falange Española de las JONS (FE de las JONS, Spanish Phalanx of the Councils of the National Syndicalist Offensive).
