Refers to actual event. When the American expeditionary force arrived in Paris. The first thing Gen Pershing did was to lead the troops to Lafayette's grave. He and his adjacent gen said a few words in English. The adjacent ended with "Lafayette...we are here." (At that time France was in dire straights with the war.) When the Parisians heard those translated words they errupted with great appreciation because America's debt ro Fance and in particular to Lafayette, was being repaid. Financially France was on the verge of bankruptcy because the $ they loaned us during our revolutionary war.
